New HEI accountability studies underway soon

HEI is embarking on a third wave of studies under its accountability research program to assess whether actions to improve air quality have been effective in improving public health. Read about 4 new studies that will start in 2020. 

Yangtze River Delta study analyzes impacts of shipping on air quality and health

December 18, 2019

Special Report 22 describes a study led by a team of investigators from Fudan and Tsinghua Universities, other Chinese research institutions, and HEI scientists Allison Patton and Katherine Walker, as part of HEI’s Global Health Program. The report provides an analysis of emissions from shipping and related activities and their impacts on air quality and health in the Yangtze River Delta and Shanghai.

Two new Rosenblith Awardees selected for 2019

HEI is pleased to announce that the recipients of the 2019 Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award are Tanya Alderete, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Colorado, and Megan Herting, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles (USC).

HEI issues request for Rosenblith Award applications

HEI has issued RFA 19-2, Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award. This RFA solicits proposals from promising candidates at the Assistant Professor level for research on air pollution and health. HEI also expects to issue an open-ended RFA on air pollution and health in January 2020. Please check our Funding page for updates.  

Two reports present initial findings on low-exposure effects

HEI has published Research Reports 200 and 203, which present the first-phase results of two studies in its program investigating possible health effects at low levels of exposure to air pollution.

2020 Annual Conference — student and postdoc travel award

November 8, 2019

HEI is inviting applications for a Travel Award for its 2020 Annual Conference.

Up to six award winners will be invited to present posters on their research at HEI’s conference in Boston, Massachusetts between April 5 and April 7, 2020. Travel awards will be awarded on a competitive basis, upon review of the application and proposed abstract.

Key Brussels meeting on air pollution and health

November 6, 2019

HEI is pleased to announce a joint meeting with WHO, ERS, and ISEE, Air pollution and Health: Recent Advances to Inform the European Green Deal, to be held January 21-22, 2020 in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting will review the latest science on PM2.5 and NO2 as a key step in evaluating whether to update Europe’s air quality policies.

New report examines household air pollution and health risk in Ghana

HEI has released Communication 19, which evaluates the contribution of household air pollution to ambient fine particle air pollution in Ghana and the impact on health using analyses conducted in the country. It also identifies strategic opportunities to address air pollution and source apportionment of air pollutants in Ghana and other low- and middle-income countries.

Study examines toxicity of aerosol mixtures derived from isoprene

HEI has published Research Report 198, which describes a study by Dr. Jason Surratt and his colleagues to evaluate the toxicity of fine particulate matter formed from the photochemical oxidation of isoprene in smog-chamber facilities.

Study examines oxidative properties of ambient PM and laboratory-generated organic aerosols

HEI has published Research Report 197, which describes a study by Dr. Nga (Sally) Ng and her colleagues to characterize and compare the oxidative properties of ambient particulate matter and laboratory-generated secondary organic aerosols in toxicological assays.

Study examines real-world emissions characterization in two traffic tunnels

March 26, 2019

HEI has published Research Report 199, which describes a study led by Dr. Xiaoliang Wang at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada. Wang and his colleagues sought to evaluate how mobile-source emissions have changed through real-world emission characterization in two traffic tunnels: the Shing Mun Tunnel in Hong Kong and the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland.
