Making the MOSES data and specimens available

May 14, 2018

HEI is making available to the public the database and material of the Multicenter Ozone Study in oldEr Subjects (MOSES). In the interest of scientific transparency and to encourage the broadest possible use of the data and the material, HEI has set up a streamlined process to access the data and the material (subject to the limited quantities available). The MOSES database may be accessed by anyone who is interested. Any qualified researcher from a not-for-profit US research center interested in doing specific analyses can request the samples.

Study evaluates metrics of exposure to traffic-related air pollutants in Atlanta

Research Report 196, Developing Multipollutant Exposure Indicators of Traffic Pollution: The Dorm Room Inhalation to Vehicle Emissions (DRIVE) Study, describes a study by Dr. Jeremy A. Sarnat that evaluated single- and multipollutant metrics of exposure to traffic-related air pollutants near and farther away from a major highway in Atlanta, as well as biological markers in a panel of students.

Study examines impacts of emissions regulations in the Atlanta area

HEI has published Research Report 195, which describes a study led by Dr. Ted Russell at the Georgia Institute of Technology as part of HEI’s Accountability Research Program. Dr. Russell and colleagues examined the extent to which regulations targeting power plants and mobile sources in the Atlanta area were effective in improving air quality and ultimately reducing cardiorespiratory emergency department visits.

State of Global Air 2018: Over 7 billion people face unsafe air

HEI has issued State of Global Air 2018 with the latest trends in air quality and its impact on human health around the world. For the first time, the 2018 report and website include worldwide estimates of exposure and health burdens from burning of solid fuels inside people’s homes.

Developing a dynamic 3D exposure model for air pollution in Hong Kong

HEI’s Research Report 194, A Dynamic Three-Dimensional Air Pollution Exposure Model for Hong Kong, describes a study led by Benjamin Barratt of King’s College London, United Kingdom, that developed a dynamic three-dimensional land-use regression model for Hong Kong and used it to estimate exposure to traffic-related air pollution.

New student and postdoc Travel Award to present at Annual Conference

For the first time, HEI is inviting applications for a Travel Award for its 2018 Annual Conference. Up to three award winners will be invited to present posters on their research at HEI’s conference in Chicago, Illinois from April 29 – May 2, 2018. Travel awards will be awarded on a competitive basis, upon review of the application and proposed abstract. The award covers the costs of conference registration, travel, hotel and meals. HEI Issues RFA 17-3: Rosenblith New Investigator Award

HEI has issued RFA 17-3 Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award. The purpose of this award is to bring new, creative investigators into active research on the health effects of air pollution. It provides three years of funding for a small project relevant to HEI’s research interests to a new investigator with outstanding promise at the Assistant Professor or equivalent level. Examining air pollution and neurocognitive effects in older women

October 12, 2017

HEI has published Research Report 193, which describes a novel study of older women in the United States led by Jiu-Chiuan Chen of the University of Southern California. The investigators examined the possible association between long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter and changes in brain volumes and in neurocognitive outcomes, specifically mild cognitive impairment and dementia.
