HEI welcomes ideas for next Strategic Plan

February 8, 2019

Quality science to inform decisions does not just happen — it takes a careful strategic effort, drawing from the best minds in policy and science to ensure that the most relevant answers can be produced in time for key upcoming decisions. HEI is now preparing to develop its Strategic Plan for Understanding the Health Effects of Air Pollution for the years 2020 to 2025. In the process it will draw on ideas from sponsors, the scientific community, and the broader community of environmental and other stakeholders.

Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award announced

Manabu Shiraiwa, who was recently promoted to associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine, was selected to receive HEI’s 2018 Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award for his proposal “Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species by Organic Aerosols and Transition Metals in Epithelial Lining Fluid.”

HEI Issues RFA 17-3: Rosenblith New Investigator Award

HEI has issued RFA 17-3 Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award. The purpose of this award is to bring new, creative investigators into active research on the health effects of air pollution. It provides three years of funding for a small project relevant to HEI’s research interests to a new investigator with outstanding promise at the Assistant Professor or equivalent level. Summer 2017 Update now available

In the Summer 2017 HEI Update, read about the Haagen-Smit Clean Air Leadership Award given to HEI President Dan Greenbaum by the California Air Resources Board, the two 2017 recipients of HEI’s Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award, and the progress of HEI studies examining potential health effects at low levels of air pollution. HEI issues open call for preliminary applications

HEI has issued Request for Applications (RFA) 17-2, Health Effects of Air Pollution, which solicits small research projects on air pollution and health. The RFA provides an application mechanism for investigators whose area of interest falls outside the topics targeted in the current major research requests. RFA 17-2 requests preliminary applications for small, innovative studies on air pollution and health in general that are relevant to HEI’s current priorities. "Direct" Approach Evaluates Air Quality Interventions

HEI Research Report 187, Causal Inference Methods for Estimating Long-Term Health Effects of Air Quality Regulations, was funded as part of HEI’s Accountability research program, aimed at understanding whether actions to improve air quality have resulted in improved health outcomes.
