Asbestos in Public and Commercial Buildings

Special Report,
1991

The Special Report Asbestos in Public and Commercial Buildings: A Literature Review and Synthesis of Current Knowledge (1991) describes the findings of the Asbestos Literature Review Panel, which was charged to determine what was known, not known, and uncertain about the risks of exposure to asbestos in public buildings. The main research questions were: (1) to determine actual airborne asbestos fiber levels prevalent in buildings, (2) to characterize peak exposure levels and their significance, and (3) to evaluate the effectiveness of asbestos management and abatement strategies in a scientifically meaningful manner.

The Special Report Asbestos in Public and Commercial Buildings: Supplementary Analyses of Selected Data Previously Considered by the Literature Review Panel (1992) summarizes additional information submitted in response to a request by the Panel to all parties to send unpublished data on asbestos exposure. The additional data were considered by the Panel and, where appropriate, summarized in this report.
