Robust scientific evidence supports revision of EU's clean air standards

The Health Effects Institute (HEI) recognizes the outcome of today’s vote from the European Parliament on the revision of the Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD), which has remained unchanged since 2008. In particular, the proposed new annual limit values of 10 µg/m³ for fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) and 20 µg/m³ for nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) across the EU by 2030 and the full alignment with the World Health Organization (WHO) Air Quality Guidelines by 2035 will provide important benefits to public health. The proposal is under consideration in the EU council, and final negotiations are expected in the next several months. 

South Asia’s lingering threat of urban air pollution

The new State of Global Air South Asia Regional Snapshot on Air Quality finds that exposure to pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM_2.5 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) continues to be an important environmental health risk. Drawing on a previously published global analysis of air quality trends and health impacts in cities, the snapshot highlights the cities and regions of concerns for both PM_2.5 and NO2.

Webinar series on air pollution and health in East Africa

Countries in East Africa experience high levels of air pollution as well as significant health effects from both outdoor and household air pollution. There is a substantial need for comprehensive data and empirical support surrounding air pollution’s impacts on health and overall well-being. Multiple efforts are currently underway to expand air quality monitoring and reinforce local capacity for data generation.
