HEI launches two new satellite studies

May 15, 2026

HEI has launched two new studies under RFA 25-1, Advancing Satellite-Derived Air Quality Data and Approaches for Use in Health Studies. These projects will develop resources for health research that link satellite-derived air quality products to quantified uncertainties and strengthen the understanding of the implications of such uncertainties for exposure, epidemiological, and health assessment research.

New traffic-related emissions research funding opportunity from HEI

HEI is pleased to announce a new research funding opportunity, RFA 26-1: Assessing the Impacts of Strategies to Reduce Traffic-Related Emissions in the United States. This RFA seeks to fund studies that assess the effects of strategies, policies, or actions designed to reduce traffic-related emissions and related air pollution concentrations in the United States. Preliminary Applications are due June 15, 2026.

Please note that studies must focus on emissions, air quality, exposure, and health in the United States.

New HEI report on air pollution regulations in China

April 13, 2026

HEI has published a new report, Accounting for the Health Benefits of Air Pollution Regulations in China, 2008–2019, by Patrick L. Kinney at the Boston University School of Public Health. Kinney and colleagues evaluated the major national regulatory policies that were implemented in China from 2008 to 2019. The investigators focused on regulations in particular regions that targeted specific sources, such as coal combustion, and how they have reduced ambient concentrations of fine particles.

New HEI report on traffic and children's health

April 13, 2026

HEI has published a new report, Intersections as Hot Spots: Assessing the Contribution of Localized Nontailpipe Emissions and Noise on the Association Between Traffic and Children’s Lung Function, by Meredith Franklin at the University of Southern California. Franklin and colleagues examined how metals from nontailpipe emissions affect asthma and lung function in children. The investigators found reductions in lung function with exposure to iron and, to a lesser extent, copper, and explored the role of noise and green space in the association.
