Prof. Berhane is the Cynthia and Robert Citrone-Roslyn and Leslie Goldstein Professor and Chair of the Department of Biostatistics at Mailman School of Public Health. His broad background is in development of statistical and data science methods for complex data structures in public health research, and their application to examination of multi-factorial effects of risk factors with multiple levels of aggregation. He has served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on National Institutes of Health-funded R01, Program Project, Training (U2R, R25, T32) and Center Grants. In addition to being the contact principal investigator of APHREA-DST, he is co-principal investigator of the Global Environmental and Occupational Health Hub for Eastern Africa, which also involves both Addis Ababa University and University of Nairobi. Dr. Berhane has been involved in teaching and mentoring students and post-doctoral fellows for more than 25 years. He was previously Director of Graduate Programs in Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Southern California from 2011–2019. He recently served as a member of the committee of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine on Assessing Causality from a Multidisciplinary Evidence Base for National Ambient Air Quality Standards and also as a member of the core panel for the Lancet Commission on the Future of Health and Economic Resilience of Africa. In addition to serving on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, he is also currently serving as a member of Science magazine’s Board of Reviewing Editors. He was a Fulbright Scholar from 2016–2017. He is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association.
