New partnership to advance data and science on air pollution and health in South Asia

January 8, 2025

Air pollution is the leading environmental health risk globally, contributing to more than 8 million deaths in 2021. Beyond the large number of deaths, exposure to air pollution affects well-being, livelihoods, and economies across the globe. The challenge is particularly severe in South Asia, where air pollution ranks as the number one risk factor for deaths in most countries. Just a few weeks ago, major cities including Lahore, Pakistan, Delhi, India, and Dhaka, Bangladesh, experienced high levels of air pollution, with impacts on visibility, daily life, economy, and public health.

Study examines cardiometabolic effects of air pollutants, noise, and green space

December 18, 2024

HEI has published a new Research Report, Cardiometabolic Health Effects of Air Pollution, Noise, Green Space, and Socioeconomic Status: The HERMES Study. Led by Ole Raaschou-Nielsen of the Danish Cancer Institute, the research team investigated four traffic-related air pollutants (fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, ultrafine particulates, and elemental carbon), noise, and green space in relation to cardiometabolic health in 2.6 million adults in Denmark.

Now Accepting Fellowship Application

November 20, 2024

HEI is excited to launch its Summer Fellowship Program for a third year! The program supports undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in the environmental health sciences to pursue research in this area.
