Continuing the legacy of Dan Greenbaum
We are pleased to share that the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) has recently created the Dan Greenbaum lectureship. This lectureship will occur each year at their annual meeting with the goal of honoring Dan’s incredible legacy while highlighting the tangible impact that scientific inquiry and research have on public health policy.
Dan led a remarkable career championing science to inform environmental policies. Joining HEI in early 1994 as its president, he led the organization for almost 30 years (1994 – 2023). During this time, he served as a leader, mentor, colleague, and friend to those at HEI and beyond. His work propelled rigorous, impartial science to inform policy decisions that improved air and environmental quality while supporting advancements in technologies for cleaner automotive vehicles with fewer emissions.
The inaugural lecture took place on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at the ISES-ISEE Joint Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Arden Pope, Professor of Economics and Karl G. Maeser Distinguished University professor, Emeritus Brigham Young University, delivered the lecture titled “Air Pollution Epidemiology: Promises and Challenges.” The lecture was introduced by HEI Review Committee member Sara Adar, with members of Dan’s family and HEI staff in attendance.
“Arden shares many similar qualities to Dan, not only as rigorous scientists but also as people who listen broadly, think boldly, and work decisively for the public good.” - Sara Adar, opening remarks at the inaugural Dan Greenbaum lectureship.
