Study examines oxidative properties of ambient PM and laboratory-generated organic aerosols

2019

HEI Research Report 197 coverHEI has published Research Report 197, Cellular and Acellular Assays for Measuring Oxidative Stress Induced by Ambient and Laboratory-Generated Aerosols, which describes a study by Dr. Nga (Sally) Ng at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and her colleagues. The investigators characterized and compared the oxidative properties of ambient particulate matter and laboratory-generated secondary organic aerosols through chamber experiments and field studies. They created various PM exposure mixtures and measured the production of reactive oxygen species in both chemical and cellular assays. This study was funded under the Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award.
