Rashid Shaikh

Director of Science Emeritus

Rashid Shaikh is responsible for management and oversight of the Institute’s diverse research initiatives and review activities. In this role he works closely with the HEI Research Committee and HEI’s scientific staff in establishing the most pressing research questions and developing Requests for Applications to address them, and then overseeing the research projects funded from those RFAs. He also works closely with the HEI Review Committee and scientific staff in evaluating final reports, and in writing and publishing commentaries to interpret the HEI-funded studies and put them in a regulatory perspective. He is also responsible for other scientific issues at HEI, such as managing conflicts of interests, use of human subjects in research, and data access.

Previously, Shaikh was the Director of Programs at the New York Academy of Sciences where he launched several new programs focused on cutting-edge areas of science. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Shaikh served as the Director of HEI’s asbestos program and as the Director of Scientific Review and Evaluation. Currently, he is also a member of U.S. EPA’s Mobile Sources Technical Review Subcommittee, the California Air Resources Board’s Science Screening Committee, and the Board of Advisors of the University of California Riverside’s Center for Environmental Research and Technology.

Shaikh received his Bachelor’s degree from St. Xavier’s College in Bombay, India, and his Master’s degree in chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India. He received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health.

In April 2020, Shaikh was oppointed Director of Science Emeritus; he remains active as an advisor for various programs at HEI.
