Research Solicitations for Diesel Inhalation Bioassay, May 2006

HEI is issuing Research Solicitations for Development of a Diesel Exhaust Exposure Facility and Conduct of a Chronic Inhalation Bioassay in Rats and Mice under the Advanced Collaborative Emissions Study (ACES), a cooperative program with government, industry and environmental organizations to test the newest model heavy duty diesel engines.

Request for Proposals (RFP) 06-1, Exposure Facility and Conduct of a Chronic Inhalation Bioassay, solicits proposals from experienced investigators with specialized facilities for conducting a chronic inhalation bioassay of diesel exhaust from an advanced heavy heavy-duty diesel engine with aftertreatment systems that will meet 2007 emission standards. The investigator team selected through RFP 06-1 will:

  • set up appropriate engine-operation and animal exposure facilities and conducting emissions characterization; conduct a chronic inhalation bioassay in rats and mice assessing cancer and noncancer effects through histopathological analyses in multiple organs and tissues, and measure additional pulmonary toxicity endpoints;
  • collaborate with scientists from other institutions to measure selected additional health endpoints funded under RFA 06-2 to supplement the measurements in the bioassay.
The deadline for submission of proposals for RFP 06-1 has passed.

Request for Applications (RFA) 06-2, Additional Health Effects Endpoints During the Chronic Bioassay, solicits applications from from the investigators already selected to conduct the bioassay under RFP 06-1 (Dr. Mauderly and his team at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute) as well as other scientists interested in measuring additional endpoints, such as vascular markers of inflammation and damage, genotoxicity, and immune responses that are not included in the measurements described in RFP 06-1.

The deadline for submission of applications for RFA 06-2 has passed.
