Request for Applications 02-1:
Measuring the Health Impacts of Actions that Improve Air Quality
The overall objective of Request for Application (RFA) 02-1 is to strengthen the
scientific basis for evaluating whether air quality regulations or other governmental
actions have resulted in improved public health.
The specific objective of the RFA is to seek studies designed to take advantage of
either planned air quality actions at the local to national level or other actions that
may result in changes in air quality. Such studies would seek to measure changes in both
air quality and exposure resulting from these actions and changes in health status in the
appropriate populations in those areas.
Proposals should be interdisciplinary in nature and include a research team with broad
expertise and viewpoints: public health experts, epidemiologists, exposure assessment
experts, physicians, and statisticians as well as others with relevant background.
Letters of Intent for RFA 02-1 are due on March 1, 2002; applications
are due on May 1, 2002.
Request for Applications 02-2:
Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award
The purpose of this award is to bring new, creative investigators into active research
on the health effects of air pollution. It will provide three years of funding for a small
project relevant to HEIs research interests to a new investigator with outstanding
promise at the Assistant Professor or equivalent level. For information on HEIs
current research priorities, applicants should consult Appendix A. HEI expects to provide
one award from this RFA this year and to continue the award on an annual basis. The
evaluation process for these applications will consider the qualifications and background
of the applicant, the quality and relevance of the research proposal, and the research
environment of the applicant.
Letters of Intent for RFA 02-2 are due on March 15, 2002; applications
are due on May 1, 2002.
Request for Preliminary Applications 02-3:
Health Effects of Air Pollution
The Request for Preliminary Applications 02-3 provides an application mechanism for
investigators whose area of interest falls outside the topics targeted in other current
research requests, but is relevant to HEIs current priorities. For information on
HEIs current priorities, applicants should consult Appendix A.
Applications can be submitted at any time. The HEI Research Committee will review
them periodically and request full applications for those considered most relevant to the
needs of the Institute.
