HEI DIESEL WORKSHOP
March 7-9, 1999
Evergreen Conference Center
Stone Mountain, GA
This targeted workshop will help HEI plan future research on the health effects of diesel engine exhaust. Our goals are to (1) discuss how to develop new scientific data that will improve our understanding of the health risks of exposure to today's diesel engines, especially in ambient settings, and (2) serve as a forum for the international exchange of information on current studies. Topics to be featured in the workshop are:
- Presentations of epidemiologic studies currently being conducted in the United States and other countries.
- Presentations by investigators funded by HEI to conduct feasibility studies for future full-scale epidemiologic studies of the relation between exposure to diesel emissions and human cancer risk.
- Report of HEI's Expert Panel on the feasibility of using existing epidemiologic studies for risk assessment and recommendations for future research.
- Discussion of methods for measuring diesel emissions and distinguishing them from other combustion products.
- Review of the latest information on the noncancer health effects of diesel emissions.
