Chairs: Frank Speizer, Harvard Medical School and Chair of the HEI International Scientific Oversight Committee, and Bingheng Chen, Fudan University, Shanghai, China and HEI International Scientific Oversight Committee

The opening session will address air pollution transport and health effects in the United States, Europe, and Asia and will discuss how knowledge gained in one region can benefit understanding globally. The session will highlight current trends in international regulation, the increasing utility of health science in informing decisions, and the implications for future research. HEI’s new review of Asian epidemiologic studies of air pollution and health, with a focus on the daily time-series studies of mortality and morbidity, will be presented. The review was conducted by HEI as part of the Public Health and Air Pollution in Asia (PAPA) Project.

8:30      Hot Topics! Recent Developments in Air Pollution Research

Chairs: Mark Utell, University of Rochester Medical School and Chair of the HEI Research Committee, and Dan Tosteson, Harvard Medical School and Chair of the HEI Review Committee

This session will present new results from HEI’s research program and current initiatives. First, HEI’s recent study on manganese (used as a fuel additive) will be placed in the context of broader risk assessments. Second, the ACES program on examining emissions and health effects from heavy-duty diesel engines designed to meet the 2007 and 2010 standards will be presented.

8:30      Introduction, Chairs

8:35      Manganese neurotoxicity
Roberto Lucchini, University of Brescia, Italy ( 300 KB)

9:00      Alternative tier 2 testing of the fuel additive MMT
Michael Davis, US Environmental Protection Agency  ( 3.2 MB)

Jane Warren, Health Effects Institute  ( 180 KB)

10:10    Break

10:30–2:00        Poster Session II (with lunch)

Posters will present studies funded by HEI and others on accountability, exposure and health effects of air toxics and particulate matter, and single city and multicity epidemiology studies conducted in Latin America.

Noon–2:00 Lunch

2:00      The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Which Particles are Which?

Chairs: John Hoidal, University of Utah and HEI Review Committee, and Rogene Henderson, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute and HEI Research Committee

This session will focus on health effects of different types of particulate matter. HEI and other organizations have supported related studies in animals and humans that employed particle concentrators in different parts of the United States. Other studies have looked at different sources (eg, wood smoke and diesel or gasoline engine exhaust). The results invite further discussion of how PM size and composition as well as different sources may contribute to health effects. HEI’s plan for a new systematic approach to these questions will be presented.

8:30      Living on the Edge: New Approaches in Assessing Exposure

Chairs: Ira Tager, University of California at Berkeley and HEI Research Committee, and Ken Demerjian, State University of New York, Albany and HEI Research Committee

Emerging evidence suggests that air pollution exposure gradients within cities and associated health effects may be larger than previously appreciated. Most previous studies assessed only between-city contrasts. New techniques are now available to aid understanding of exposures at the within-city scale. Recent developments in spatial modeling are being used to increase understanding of how different sources may contribute to personal exposure and health effects. How reliable are these methods and what kinds of data are needed for their validation? Can they help us distinguish health effects of pollutants from different sources? Efforts to measure and model exposure (including geographical information systems and geostatistical interpolation) and their impact on assessment of health effects will be presented and critiqued.
